EVALUATING YOUR SETUP

What Do You Want From the Company Relationship Behind Your License?

Licensed Surety Bail Bondsmen evaluate company relationships for different reasons. You may want stronger underwriting guidance, clearer operating systems, more room to build your own local identity, or simply a company relationship that fits the way you want to operate.

VIRGINIA STATE REQUIREMENTS

Your Virginia Surety Authority Has Multiple Pieces

Holding one credential by itself does not create full bond-writing authority. In Virginia, DCJS regulations and State Corporation Commission rules require several components to work together seamlessly.

VIRGINIA DCJS

INSURER / POWER

Qualifying Power of Attorney

Holding a Property & Casualty producer license or DCJS license alone does not authorize bonding without active qualifying powers of attorney on file with DCJS containing the required surety and registered agent contact info.

INSURER BACKING

The Surety Relationship Behind the Agent Network

For a licensed Virginia Surety Bail Bondsman, the company relationship behind the bond affects more than the name printed on the power. It influences your daily writing limits, how larger risks are reviewed, the speed of power inventory fulfillment, and how claims are handled.

Qualified Amistad agents may be appointed through Allegheny Casualty Company, subject to DCJS licensing, SCC Property & Casualty producer authority, appointment eligibility, underwriting requirements, authority, company approval, and executed agreements.

QUALIFYING POWER OF ATTORNEY NOTE

Why Does the Qualifying Power Matter in VA?

Virginia DCJS rules state that all qualifying powers of attorney filed with the Department must contain the name and contact information for both the surety agent and the registered agent of the issuing company.

If an applicant is unable to obtain a qualifying power of attorney prior to license issuance, DCJS may issue a 30-day temporary licensure letter—however, that letter explicitly does not authorize bonding until the power is properly filed.

Amistad assists qualified agents through the power filing and appointment workflow to ensure full compliance before writing.
RISK EVALUATION

Bond-Writing Authority Is Only Part of the Equation

Having authority to write a bond and knowing whether you should write it are two different things. Every bond carries financial exposure, and those decisions become more critical as your volume and bond sizes increase.

SELECT A REAL-WORLD UNDERWRITING SCENARIO:
LARGE BOND AMOUNT

What deserves additional attention before accepting the risk?

For high-dollar bonds, underwriting goes beyond basic premium. Review indemnitor financial stability, verify liquid assets or tangible collateral documentation, evaluate defendant ties to the local Virginia community, and check whether prior court appearances demonstrate reliability. Amistad provides direct consultation for large-bond underwriting reviews.

* Note: Underwriting guidance is intended for general educational risk evaluation and does not constitute a guaranteed bond approval or universal rule. Executed contracts and approval requirements govern all specific bonds.

CASE MANAGEMENT

What Happens Around Every Bond Matters Too

A license, P&C authority, and qualifying powers still do not create the day-to-day operation. Amistad helps qualified agents build practical processes around every step of a case.

Tools Should Make the Business Easier to Run

Calls arrive while you are in court, posting another bond, driving, or asleep. We assist agents in setting up digital intake, centralized customer notes, document storage, automated court reminders, and reporting tools so inquiries don't fall through the cracks.

LOCAL BRAND EQUITY

Your Name. Your Market. Your Business.

The Agent Network is designed to help qualified agents build value around their own local business identity rather than requiring every agent to disappear behind the Amistad name.

YOU BUILD & OWN
  • Your local business brand & identity
  • Your local customer & family relationships
  • Your professional reputation in Virginia
  • Your local online search & market presence
  • Your independent business decisions
AMISTAD SUPPORTS
  • A- rated surety relationship & power access
  • Practical underwriting development & risk reviews
  • Standardized operating workflows & disclosures
  • Digital tools, intake & automated reminders
  • Strategic local market growth guidance

Independent Does Not Mean Unsupported: Amistad agents are independent contractors responsible for operating their own businesses within DCJS regulations, SCC rules, power agreements, and applicable law.

Already Working Through Another Company Relationship?

Evaluating another General Agent or surety relationship does not automatically eliminate responsibilities under your current arrangement. Existing qualifying powers of attorney, open bond liabilities, premium remittances, BUF accounts, forfeitures, or contractual obligations must be addressed professionally.

If you are considering a change, understand what remains open under your current relationship and confirm the current Virginia DCJS instructions regarding power filings, agency updates, and licensing maintenance.

Who does Amistad work with in Virginia?

Amistad contracts primarily with qualified Virginia Surety Bail Bondsmen who hold active Property & Casualty producer authority through the SCC and meet DCJS licensing requirements.

Who is the surety company behind Amistad's Virginia agent relationship?

Qualified agents may write through Allegheny Casualty Company (AM Best Rated A- Excellent), subject to licensing, appointment eligibility, underwriting authority, and company approval.

What is Amistad's role compared with the surety insurer?

Allegheny Casualty Company is the surety insurer providing corporate power backing. Amistad Insurance Services, Inc. acts as the General Agent providing contracting, underwriting consultation, operational tools, and agent support. You operate your local business as an independent contractor.

Do I need to keep my Virginia Property & Casualty license active?

Yes. Under Virginia law, a Surety Bail Bondsman must maintain active Property & Casualty producer authority with the SCC alongside their DCJS Surety Bail Bondsman license.

What are qualifying powers of attorney, and why do they matter in Virginia?

Qualifying powers of attorney contain specific agent and registered agent contact information required by DCJS to grant bonding authority. A temporary 30-day DCJS letter does not permit writing bonds until the qualifying powers are filed.

Can I build my own local bail bond brand while working with Amistad?

Yes. Our network is designed to help qualified agents establish local brand equity, digital presence, and customer trust under their own business name.

What if I am already appointed through another surety or General Agent?

Any existing company relationship must be handled professionally. Open bond liabilities, BUF balances, power inventory, and contractual obligations must be reconciled in accordance with agreements and DCJS rules.

Does Amistad guarantee appointment or qualifying power authority?

No. Appointments and powers are subject to background review, credit check, compliance history, underwriting evaluation, company approval, and executed agreements.
